Department profile

The Department of Economics is the only one of the departments of the Faculty of Operation and Economics of Transport and Communications of the University of Žilina which provides comprehensive economic education in the 1st, the 2nd and in the field of Economics and Business Management also in the third degree.

The cross-sectional nature of the scientific disciplines at the heart of Economics and Business Management and Financial Management programs ensures the universality of this type of education while specializing in two separate study programs, creates prerequisites for the competitive advantages of graduates in the labor market and wide possibilities of their employment. The department provides education for future economists, managers, financial managers, analysts and experts in other related professions capable of working in any sphere of the national economy and solving tasks with varying degrees of difficulty depending on the level of education provided.

International cooperation and recognition of the Department of Economics with the wide professional public, but also close cooperation with the business sector, reflecting the changing requirements and needs of practice, increases the credibility of study programs provided by internal and external staff of the Department of Economics. The attractiveness of the study is also enhanced by projects supporting education intended for domestic and foreign students (ERASMUS, ERASMUS +, etc.).

Economics and Business Management

Financial management

Both study programs have generally the same content basis in the first (bachelor) degree of study, in the engineering degree of study their specialization is largely manifested. Bachelor graduates in both fields are qualified to pursue the profession of business economists, managers, accountants, financial managers and analysts, to solve complex and less demanding economic tasks and decision-making problems. They are employed at different levels of management, not just the company.

Graduates of the second level of university study in the program Economics and Business Management are able to analyze complex economic relationships in business processes, design and implement adequate managerial decisions. They are characterized by a high degree of autonomy in economic and managerial decision-making, they can work with complex information systems in companies and also demonstrate a high degree of management organization of managerial work and managerial communication, they can perform various managerial functions of top level business management. Graduates of the 3rd degree (doctoral studies) have the highest degree of professional knowledge in the field of study, they solve complex scientific procedures and methods of basic and applied research in the given field, in practice they are able to work in functions with high degree of independence, responsibility and creativity.

Graduates of the second degree of the university study in the Financial Management program are comprehensively trained in the theory and practice of corporate financial management, international companies, corporate relations to financial markets and abroad. They are able to solve complex tasks and independently perform managerial functions at the level of top and middle management. They may be employed as financial managers, analysts and intermediaries between businesses and financial market institutions and abroad, as financial managers of non-profit organizations, in auditing, advisory and brokerage companies. Doctoral graduates have knowledge of the scientific methods of examining the core areas of the theory and practice of corporate financial management and are able to bring new, original knowledge for the further development of financial theory and practice and participate in the development of the field of study. They are ready to act as sound financial experts in various positions and in various functions of practice.
