Environmental economy and management

Ing. Stanislav Hreusík, PhD.

Pressure on the efficient use of sources from natural environments has become much more important than ever before due to population explosion, growth in consuming and growing difficulties of sustainability of ecological systems.
The answer to our worsening human environment could lie in considering its consequences on all levels – in people’s minds and in economical and political decisions of governments and companies’ managements in order to deal with most critical environmental issues. The objective of the subject environmental economics and management and this textbook (intended for students of Economics and company management) is to contribute to discussion and to help understand economic issues in a larger context of environmental conservation.
The main means of protecting the environment is environmental politics which represents a component part of economy in most countries. From a micro-economical point of view it attempts to affect production and consumption, cause changes in behaviour of these subjects in favour of maintaining the quality of the natural environment and to lead towards and assure sustainable development. The need for sustainable development integrates with environmental protection in economic policies of particular industries.
It is important to realize that there are many opinions and methods (various means of market or direct impacts) on how to sustain our natural eco-system. These come as a result of practical environmental politics set in a global scope. The co-relation of economics and politics in environmental conservation context is the subject of the first part of this textbook called Environmental economics and politics.
The second part is concerned with micro-economic aspects of managing protection of the natural environment on the basis of existing instrument portfolio. Its resulting elements are environmental managing systems which are gradually establishing in Slovak companies.
In accordance with Environmental economics and management curriculum the third part is dedicated to Creation and protection of workplace in context of relevant factors affecting health and safety at work. The final part concerns with environmental law which evolved as a result of growing problems of sustainability on Earth. To simplify we may say that economy of natural environment formed politics of natural environment. Politics of natural environment formed and still forms environmental law and environmental law (by means of natural environment legislation) more or less forms economics of natural environment.
The whole subject symbolically ends with a chapter considering growing significance of waste. Supplement brings general information on global aspects of harming the environment and reasons for existence of global environmental politics.
